As the 2017 Peach Season has come to a close, one of the most common questions we receive from customers calling and stopping by our farm is “When is peach season over?” or, “When does peach season begin”?
In Georgia, peach season typically begins in Mid-May and lasts through Mid-August. As spring starts to turn into summer during this warm month, we are harvesting what are called our clingstone peaches. Clingstone peaches are early season peaches in which the fruit or ‘meat’ of the peach cling to the pit or ‘stone’ of the peach. The first peach variety we begin harvesting is the Flavorich, which usually begins around May 12th.
As the heat of official summer gets closer, we begin harvesting our ‘Semi-free’ peaches. These are hybrid peaches which are fused between the clingstone and the freestone. The semi-free peaches usually begin around June 1st and last through June 20th.
Last but certainly not least come our freestone peaches. Freestone peaches begin around the second week in June and last well into the dog days of summer, through August 15th. Our very last variety that we harvest is usually the Flameprince, which comes in around August 1st and lasts through August 15th
While peach season is three months long, The Dickeys stay busy all year long in the orchards, looking at every detail. Winter months bring pruning, fertilizing, planting and making sure our 1,000 acres of orchards are being provided with all the nutrients and love they need to become sweet Georgia peaches.
